Exchange safely

Trust Aboki is not a bureau de change and never holds your money. You exchange directly with the licensed provider you choose.

Five rules that prevent most problems

  1. 1.Exchange only at the BDC’s licensed branch, face to face — never at a “meet-up” spot.
  2. 2.Never pay a “deposit” or “commitment fee” in advance to hold a rate.
  3. 3.Pay by transfer only to the business’s own account, at the branch, and confirm funds in your own bank app.
  4. 4.Never share your password, OTP, PIN, BVN or card details — we will never ask.
  5. 5.Keep the agreed rate in your Trust Aboki messages: it’s your record if something goes wrong.

What our checks mean — and what they don’t

What “Licence verified” means

A member of our team checked the business’s licence details against the Central Bank of Nigeria’s published list of licensed bureaux de change, on the date shown, and the check is renewed every licence year. Each profile says exactly what was checked and when.

What it doesn’t mean

It isn’t an endorsement by the CBN, a guarantee that an exchange will go well, or insurance. We don’t hold money, so we can’t refund a payment. Ratings and response times come from real exchanges on Trust Aboki and are labelled as such.

Scams to watch for

  • “Pay a deposit to lock the rate”

A licensed BDC doesn’t need your money before you arrive. Anyone asking for an advance transfer is the most common scam in person-to-person FX.

  • Messages that look like they’re from us

Our team never writes inside your conversation with a BDC, and never asks for your password, OTP, PIN or BVN. Report any message that claims to be from Trust Aboki.

  • Fake payment screenshots

Screenshots are easy to fake. Only hand over cash or goods once the money shows in your own bank app.

  • A “better rate” somewhere else

Being asked to meet away from the branch, or to move to another app to get a special rate, is a warning sign. Keep the agreed rate in your messages here.

  • Businesses pretending to be a verified BDC

Check the name on the profile matches the licence details, and compare the licence number with the CBN’s published list yourself.

If something goes wrong

  1. Stop and don’t send more money. Scammers often ask for “one more fee”.
  2. Report it using “Report a problem” on the offer, message or BDC profile. It takes under a minute, and we review serious reports first.
  3. Open a case from the request page if an exchange you arranged here went wrong. We review the platform records and both accounts.
  4. If you lost money, contact your bank straight away and report it to the police. We’ll share the platform records they need through proper channels.
